Title:
Bridge Expansion Joints and Bearings

Presenter: Dick Miles

Due to thermal expansion and contraction…bridges move.  The length of a bridge or an individual span can determine how much it will move with the varying temperatures.  In this presentation we will explain why Elastomeric Bearings are needed under bridge girders and the different types of bearings that can be used under various structures.

Expansion Joints provide a smooth transition for traffic between the bridge and the roadway while accommodating movement.  We will explain the various types of Expansion Joints used in our area, what is good and bad about them, how to install them and how to inspect them.

Dick has been dealing with Expansion Joints and Bearings since the 1970s, so he can give a broad perspective on the history behind their use and development.
